Festivals in United Kingdom
Street carnival, historic bonfires, and a summer of arts festivals
The UK’s best-known street festival, Notting Hill Carnival, began in the 1960s as a response to racial tensions in West London and grew into Europe’s largest street festival, rooted in Caribbean carnival traditions brought by the Windrush generation. It shares the calendar with much older observances — Bonfire Night on November 5 commemorates a specific historical event (the 1605 Gunpowder Plot) and has kept the same date since the 17th century, making it one of the most reliably fixed dates on this entire site.
Scotland runs its own festival season each August, anchored by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Wales and Northern Ireland each have distinct national celebrations. Festivals.one starts with the UK’s most internationally recognized events and will expand into the devolved nations’ calendars as coverage deepens.
