Festivals in Thailand

A solar new year of water, and a lunar night of light

Songkran is as much a national water fight as a religious observance — the ritual of pouring water over Buddha images and elders’ hands to wash away the past year has expanded, especially in tourist areas like Chiang Mai and Bangkok’s Khao San Road, into days-long public water fights that shut down entire streets. Loy Krathong, held months later, is quieter and more contemplative: small floating offerings of banana leaf, flowers, and candles are released onto rivers and canals nationwide, and in Chiang Mai it coincides with Yi Peng, the sky lantern release that has become one of Thailand’s most photographed festival moments.

Both festivals are celebrated nationwide but look meaningfully different by city, so Festivals.one notes the regional variations — Chiang Mai’s Loy Krathong is a genuinely different experience from Bangkok’s or Sukhothai’s — rather than treating “Thailand” as one uniform celebration.
