Fiesta country — running with bulls and throwing tomatoes, on fixed dates every year
San Fermín runs every year from July 6 to July 14 in Pamplona, built around the daily encierro (bull run) through the old town’s streets — a tradition formalized in the 16th century around the feast day of the city’s patron saint. La Tomatina, by contrast, is a 20th-century invention: what began as a spontaneous food fight among young people in Buñol in 1945 became an organized, ticketed tomato-throwing festival held on the last Wednesday of August.
Spain’s calendar of regional and religious fiestas is enormous — Las Fallas in Valencia, Semana Santa processions across Andalusia, and hundreds of local patron saint festivals — and Festivals.one will expand into that depth over time, starting from the two events with the widest international recognition.
